SVALBARD

My studies of arctic light continued in 2008 and 2010 when I traveled to Svalbard, a cold but stunning archipelago above the Northern tip of Norway. Rare were the instances when the sun broke through the thick layer of clouds that persisted throughout the first visit. One such moment occurred during a four-day boat trip from Longyearbyen to Ny Olesund, an international scientific research base about 400 miles from the North Pole. As we headed North on the MS Farm boat, the tall swells vigorously rocked our boat, while the beaming sun rays brightened the black waves, diffusing the tumultuous scene with a sense of serenity. It's moments like these that inspire me to draw.
